Alpha School

NEW JERSEY

"At the Alpha School in Jackson, NJ, we have a class we call "Athletic Arts" once per week. Our Art, Music and Physical Education teachers collaborate to create lessons where all three specials take place together. These lessons combine sensory activities with fine & gross motor skills, making our exceptional students feel more successful. Our K-5 students at the Alpha School used basketballs and paint in many creative ways to make a canvas to hang in our hallway."
-Sara Stockton, Art Teacher

Berea Elementary

SOUTH CAROLINA

“Mrs. Culpepper’s 4th-grade class conducted an experiment on force and energy using a basketball and different surfaces. Their data revealed that a basketball bounces significantly higher on a tile surface compared to carpet or a pillow surface.

In PE, our students poured their passion for the game into designing custom jerseys and shoes, each one a unique reflection of their cultures, personalities, and interests. From bold colors to meaningful symbols, their designs told stories of who they are both on and off the court. But the creativity didn’t stop there—after crafting their gear, they hit the floor to showcase their freestyle basketball skills.”

-Lauren Popores, Teacher

Calvin Public School

OKLAHOMA

“In this exciting and engaging video, students are combining math, spelling, and creativity in a fun filled learning experience! Watch as they tackle fractions with interactive shots, applying their understanding of fractions to make decisions on where to aim. Students lined themselves up in order from least to greatest and greatest to least to compare values. But that’s not all, they also practice their spelling words by participating in the game “Shoot the word.” In this challenge, players must correctly spell their assigned word before they can take a shot at the basketball hoop. The more accurate their spelling, the better their chances of scoring points from different shooting spots. To top it off, students get into the March Madness spirit by coloring special themed sheets, celebrating the excitement of the season. It’s a perfect blend of learning, fun, and creativity.”

Columbia Elementary School

OHIO

“At Columbia Elementary, homerooms combined with their PE Classes to recognize how they can be a SUB ABOVE in class, at recess, at lunch, and at home.

As a whole school, the PBIS reward was a school-wide March Madness Bingo game! When students won, they came down to the gym to participate basketball challenges and win coupons for Jersey Mikes subs, provided by our local Jersey Mike's. They even put our work on display there!

Thank you, Jersey Mike's and Harlem Globetrotters for teaching Columbia what it means to be a Sub Above!”

Everson Elementary

WASHINGTON

“Our students are learning about perseverance this month, so they decided to create a video story about a basketball who attends Everson Elementary and is trying to discover what he was made to do! When he struggles to determine his purpose, he shows perseverance and never gives up. It isn't until 5th grade that Dribble McDunkerson discovers his true purpose- to play basketball! Thanks to his fifth grade friends he realizes that he loves basketball- and he especially loves trick shots, just like the Harlem Globetrotters!

This video was created with students from kindergarten through fifth grade, so it truly was a school wide collaboration! Our students had a ton of fun filming and attempting trick shots for the video. We would be so thrilled to have a visit from the Globetrotters!”

-Ethan Sherron, School Teacher

Lincoln Elementary School

WASHINGTON

“We made a video about the mascot of Lincoln Elementary school, Linc the beaver. Linc wants to learn how to play basketball but is getting discouraged. Instead of giving up, he gets supported by Lincoln students, energy from Jersey Mikes and inspired by the Harlem Globetrotters so that he can stay positive, work hard, learn from others and improve his skills. During the video we highlight our 4th and 5th grade basketball team, a kindergarten class doing a basketball art project, a 1st grade class that did the madlibs activity and our special education students cheering Linc on. Lincoln students were involved in helping create and record the script as well.”

Sandhill Elementary

WISCONSIN

“We are Sandhill Elementary PE Teachers from Stoughton, Wisconsin! We are excited to be submitting a video that highlights basketball skills shared from our talented K-5 students taken during our basketball unit. This unit at Sandhill incorporates the fundamental skills of basketball and is taught in ways that will allow for students of all skill levels and abilities to find success. We aim to teach basketball in a way that will engage students and help them to fall in love with the game of basketball! By including cultural elements into our unit, such as The Harlem Globetrotters (this contest) and the March Madness Tournament, our students have been very excited to learn and participate in our lessons! Please enjoy our elementary "Harlem Globetrotters" as they CREATE and share their own BASKETBALL tricks that are sure to entertain the masses! Thank you for the opportunity! We'd LOVE nothing more than to host the Harlem Globetrotters at our small town school in Wisconsin!”

-Melinda Dozois, Teacher

Shreve Elementary

OHIO

“This video was recorded, edited, and produced by two 5th grade students who love basketball and creating videos! It shows different classes and grade levels using the Harlem Globetrotters and March madness to get the students excited about reading, researching, poetry and more!”

-Sarah Knight, School Teacher

South Lebanon Elementary School

PENNSYLVANIA

“Students in second grade participated in basketball themed activities throughout March. The activities included picture book madness, STEM basketball basket creation, “pumped for” writing, and research about the history of basketball.

These activities were just what our students needed to begin the final push to the end of the year! The grade level worked hard to show their creativity while having fun!”

-Alaina Knox, School Teacher

Twin Oak Elementary School

OHIO

“At Twin Oak Elementary, students worked on developing their Harlem Globetrotter basketball skills and creativity during our March Madness tournament in Physical Education class. Every student had a role to play, from Athletic Trainer and Equipment Manager to Jersey Mike’s “Sub Designer” and more! This approach allowed students to succeed, no matter their basketball skill level, and gave our creative students who love art a chance to earn their team extra points in PE. All the points were tallied for their ranking in the March Madness tournament, where the winners got to sign the “Golden Basketball.” When everyone plays a part, we all win!”
